Kickstarting 2018 With Women

This January, we’ve had the honor of doing TWO grant events organized by women AND doing the kickoff meetings for SEPA Mujer, and we couldn’t think of a better way to start 2018 than with a month full of women leadership, giving, and empowerment!

First we started with “the Ladies of the Station” who created a Random Acts of Kindness event where they got some personal hygiene, entertainment, winter gear, food and cleaning supplies, put them into shoeboxes and wrapped them up with inspirational gifts on top! These were given to local community members in need and Huntington Station neighbors who could use a little extra kindness!

Sheila Flythe one of the founders of LEAD, a mentoring program for girls, also organized another event to help girls in need in a similar manner.  Cute makeup bags were stuffed with necessities for girls like personal hygiene products, combs, and of course extra goodies like lipgloss and nail polish. Sheila and her fellow mentors hope to be able to continue this program on a monthly basis to make girls in the community who have some basic necessities feel like they have one less thing to worry about and allow them to focus on their education and future!

Finally, we are excited that January brought us the beginning of our new partnership with SEPA Mujer. We have been searching for a better way to engage our Latina community and we feel a partnership with SEPA to do empowerment and leadership training will have positive impacts and those will not just be on the women who participate, but on their children, families, neighbors, coworkers, and more! SEPA also provides legal services and other assistance to help Latinas and their families prosper.

SEPA Mujer held two informational sessions so far in January and had two great group of women attend. SEPA will be hosting two more information sessions in February – one on Feb 8th 12pm – 2pm and one on Feb 22nd 4pm – 6pm. Rommy, the community organizer for SEPA Mujer’s Huntington Station branch will also be hosting office hours out of the Source the Station office. Those will be Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the time still to be determined so stay tuned for the time of those.

SEPA Mujer will also be hosting an event in March, prior to the kickoff of their Leadership 101 course, in order to fundraise (please like the idea). If you are interested in participating, sponsoring or any information, please let us know!
