Hempstead Village will hold two special meetings this week to elicit feedback on the community benefits agreement related to the $2 billion plan to revitalize the downtown area.
The village board of trustees, in partnership with the Community Benefits Agreement Committee, will hold a special meeting Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. in the community room of the Hempstead Public Library, on 115 Nichols Ct.
The second meeting will be Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. in Kennedy Park’s meeting room, on 335 Greenwich St. in Hempstead.
The redevelopment plan, led by Plainview-based Renaissance Downtowns and Manhattan real estate investment firm UrbanAmerica, offers a combination of condominiums, co-ops and rental apartments that are to accommodate various income levels.
It also includes a hotel, shops, open spaces, parking and entertainment. The project is expected to create more than 3,500 permanent jobs and 10,000 construction jobs, developers and village officials have said.
Community activists have demanded that a community benefits agreement between the village and the developers incorporate jobs, business and housing for local residents.
Village officials and the developers have said a portion of the jobs created by the project will be for village residents.
A group representing residents, business owners, social services agencies, and elected officers will also meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Nassau County Legislative Office Building, conference room 105, on 1550 Franklin Ave. in Mineola.
